Over the past few months the studio space has been the source of information for my work. The mundane (sun light and the textures/ information) found in the space has been the main focus in my research. The angled sunlight was my first source; lumen printing used the light to create physical pieces (photographs) and played with looking at positive and negative space, with the light creating this shadow mark on the paper. From this time (transience) started to become a focus; the idea of the work being time dependent, making the audience aware of their surroundings with the work changing before their eyes. My studio practice and critical context have been in balance with each other; each of them informing one another. My critical context looks at artists work which was dependent on the space and audience; they all inform each other. With this idea, the location of my outcome needs to be in my studio space and the work needs to be based on information from the room. Vera Rohm has influenced my work, with her research on the space before she creates work that will respond to the environment; sun light (movement) has been the main source for her work and creating pieces which highlight the movement on sculptures or on the building itself. A recent exhibition called ‘Space Shifters’ at the Hayward Gallery helped me think about creating work that explores the space you are in and creating the mundane more exciting like Charlotte Posenenske (ventilation pipes) and Monika Sosnowska (handrail) play with materials found in the space. My work has also looked at the framework created by the ‘white walls’ and looking at the information around it. The space above is full of interconnecting flows of information and these have been the textures played in my work. Thinking of boundaries, I have focused on the wall; placing information that happens just outside the wall, back onto the wall. Exploiting the situations presented, like the wall being 3 separate boards and using these boundaries which cut up the information to become part of the work (using the information of environment to add to the work). This idea of making use of the situations in the given environment has become a common focus in my work this year.
