Recording the studio light.
The natural source of light that flows across my wall has been a major study in my works, through out the year I have outlined the different movements of the light.
I have recorded the light at different times of day and from this has resulted in an interesting overlay of lines.
I never really took much interest in them as they were just research and my other works where covering them up. When I decided to strip down my wall of work to think things over I was intrigued by the shapes and abstract nature of what was drawn on the wall.
Sketch Book - times of all the lines

I played with the wall itself, by scrapping away layers of paint to create texture and shadows in the wall.
This play of working with what is already there has been a common theme in my work:
Using the natural light source
playing with the idea of adding and removing from the space (scrapping away paint and adding other materials to the wall to highlight the sun light)
Looking at the wall - look like musical scores
Playing with the same idea of turning immaterial (light) into a physical image (outlines).
With most of the lines I recorded the time, so in a way they are 'time lines'.
Snarkitecture
A creative group who play with creating designs that respond to the space and look part of the space- similar to Donald Judds permanent house works.
Thinking of playing with what is already there, and getting influence from my 'quick responses' with my shadows work using the paper. Thinking of upscaling this to the size of the wall, with the wall kinking out of place, with a pattern cut out to create shadows when the light hits it.
I first tested this idea by creating a pattern that I could cut at home with the tools i had to use, as laser cut wouldn't fit 8x4 mdd board. I couldn't create the oblong shapes to scale as the cutters i had where bigger, to create a pattern that what interesting but referenced to the cable tray.
Cut out the holes before using a saw to connect them to create oblongs
Shadows created from the cut outs
final pattern
When trying to bend the board, it snapped! I asked sim and he said need the pattern to be equal, so all oblong and need to soak the mdd before bending. I tried out bending mdd with a spare bit.
Playing with the shapes in the light, play of positive and negative space (shadows and the cut out space of the MDF).
The artist ... who from the shape of light, talks about abstract art and music, and it has intrigued me how the scores of light recorded on the wall look like music scores.

Like the frames created by the A2 size sheets and the negative spaces of the wall showing through

Went to one of connor audio classes and noticed the sound proofing of the walls and this has intrigued me, about altering the space and me thinking about my time lines looking like music notes.
In the laser cut room there a foam piece with has been craved away to look like a land scape and this has got me thinking of wanting to create a wall piece which could alter the sound (Anish Kapoor piece at listen gallery) and also represent the space with a pattern.

Close up of the texture of the ceiling printed onto board- I really like the colour combination

This work is similar to vera rohm - which he intense research to creating structures that play with the sun light and time. She has exhibited shows which have been about the gallery spaces themselves - recording the sunlight movement across the whole building - hangs up a sequence of the same shape across the whole space, highlighting the movement of the sun.
It is also a time device, turning time into a physical subject matter.
Playing layering - creating a pattern with my time lines
Trying to figure what areas to have raised, carved, patterned, left bare
More playings for laying out my wall
Creating my own walls- can add and remove layers from the walls more easily. Getting the exact same shape - 8x4 walls. From recording the the outlines onto newsprint paper an unexpected creation of a work appeared - I really liked the layout of the paper on the wall - creating this geometric pattern on the wall - adding to the feel of the piece - thinking about layers - positive and negative space.
When taking down the paper, looking at each piece sit own individual piece. Really like the composition of the line work. Like my work in the hallway, playing to the BOUNDARIES and exploiting them, enjoying the framework of the A2 paper, playing to this use of the shapes being cut up.

Test Board - playing with paint to see if you can still see the etched layers
Test Board- testing depths and size of cutters
This idea of using the BOUNDARIES played into my wall layout, treating each 8x4 as an individual, when the the overlapping shapes crossed onto another board, I highlighted the difference by adding texture, height or carving away a layer. This goes back to the comment about being dependent on the space and that I let my work develop and take on influence from the situations that have occurred in my research.
Marking out the drawings from the studio onto my MDF boards.
Using foam board to play with what areas I want raised. The layering of the soft/ abstract shapes reminding me of Jean Arpe.

measuring out my drawings onto the boards
tracing my images onto the boards
Deciding what layers to have raised
Deciding what layers to have deep, raised or patterned
Using Foam board to play with layering
Images of me routering out the lines of the light first.
Then started to play with texture.
Using the cable tray pattern and the ceiling texture.
Same scale -Drawing out the cable tray pattern onto the boards
Had two different sized cutters to create the pattern
Routering the different levels - was hard to keep to one level
Close up of the pattern
Then played with creating different depths but taking out a layer in certain sections.
Letting the lines dictate the shapes
Testing out the angled light on my test board to see if can still see the etched layer with paint in the sun light.
I feel that the paint is making it look flat.
Experimenting with light - see how the layers show in angled light (replicate the angled sun light in studio

Trying to figure out if I want to paint the boards white or keep them bare. I have made a judgment that the need to be one colour, not white onto and the detail bare or it either one or the other.
I spoke to my tutors and they said keep it bare till I have put it up on wall and the judge.
Speaking to Jost and said about the artist DJ Simpson who plays with the layers of ply, when routing into, the different layers are shown.
Incorporating the space outside the 'white wall', leaving the clay mark
The Clay residue fits in with the light lines. Incorporating the space outside the 'white wall'. Information bouncing back and forth from the different layers and spaces of the room.
A student commented on the colour combinations - how they all go together and compliment - all don't play with the bright white- all of white and browns- responding to the space.
