I have chosen my space in Blue Studio as it has been environment which I have constantly studied and explored the light workings.
I am also in the Herbert Read in a collaboration process with Sam and Louisa. With this piece it has given me the freedom to explore my recent findings of working with wax paper.
Width of my area is 5m 75cm.
After speaking to Bob Mathews, he said it could be possible to reveal the breeze block wall as I am responding to the pattern with my wax wall. I also really dislike the quality of the white boards which are there.
From the realisation that I could create my own walls or add new shapes to the bare brick excited me, so I created a mini version of my space to play with ideas.
Playing with the idea of suspending paper scrolls, wax paper brick wall, removing the wall and have bare brick to attach new walls, paper structures.
From testing out my ideas I'm realising that the space is becoming to claustrophobic and busy... is less more?
Trying to figure out what idea capture my imagination the most and gives me the most excitement.
There is descriptions, explaining the ideas behind each composition on the photos (hover over).
The leaning print represents my idea of having a piece coming from the blinds- idea of pulling the blind to reveal the image.
The angle of shards - cut walls to fit the light movement. Also created one into a shelf and having the light shard connecting to the floor.
Testing out the wax paper brick wall.
Having it fixed from a new direction, highlight the wax more.
treating the pattern as a big wall hanging.
having it on the other side.
shaping the paper into a triangular shape, to represent light vaults.
Having both paper structures in the space- looking like the paper disappears under the floor and comes back up.
Bird eye view.
I'm really enjoying the triangular shape and the wrap around light shard.
Seeing if the wax brick wall and the paper structure work.
After looking at the Herbert Read, saw there was a wood pole running across the beam where my paper scroll can sit.
My scroll will sit in between Louisa and Sam's work, with Louisa's concrete used to hold my scroll in place.
The wooden pole stretching over the two rsg beams.
Putting my paper structure in this space as it getting to condensed in my blue studio space.
I looked back at the idea of creating my own walls, I like the material of birch ply and though about creating a perforated wall with the pattern from the cable tray. With this Idea i explored with my mini maquette different layouts of these 5 new walls.
Playing with spacing
connecting the floor
the cable tray pattern
thinking of the negatives.
From looking back at my previous plays with the space, I started to become more playful with the 5 boards.
Playing with the idea of leaving walls, representing a mirrored look of the light vaults above.
The images below show a more direct response to the light vault.
After Moyra Derby talk, she introduced an artist (Eileen Gray - screen) who created a piece which was a brick wall, I responded to this by turning my suspended wall into a floor piece, and thinking about how the audience approach the wall form certain angles.
I enjoyed the way Moyra spoke about 'usefulness' - relationship between architecture and objects.
How artists send 'invitations' to there work - softness of a material - want to touch it.
introduced a group of artists called - Outside Architecture. There works play with the space of the exhibition.
responding to the breeze brick wall.
thinking about connecting the wall to floor again
turning the wax wall into a floor structure rather than suspended.
thinking about how people enter the space- from the entering angle the wall looks connected
From another angle it is open.
Thinking of materials - wax paper - intriguing- everyones response is to touch it.
After explain my idea of a perforated wall to Moyra, she took me to the architecture building as they have this display in there office. They designed a pattern for the walls- leaving the wood bare and the MDF shelves were coloured all the way through.
This led me onto the play with colouring and constructing shapes with the dust from routing MDF.
EXPLANTATION ON THE PAGE 'THINKING OF MATERIALS'.
From researching previous MA Students at Uca, I came across this artist Marcelo de Melo who has exhibited in my space- This highlights the the light shard and has transformed the space with it all being white.
