Friday 12th April, studio walls take down.
After seeing the wall taken down, could see the full stretch of the light running across the space.
Checking my breeze block wall - removed one panel to check behind to see if it is worth taking down the wall.
Testing out the wax paper in the space.
Looking at the different angles of approaching the site.
Suspending my laser MDF on a single screw - playing with the swinging motion.
From Flora Parrots Talk - found out that these signs around UNI were specifically designed and the layouts is controlled by the designer. If they want to change the information they have to get the maker in to change them.
Similar approach with using a mesh system in back to attach too and minimal colour pallet.
The Light
Intrigued by the idea of placing objects in the light path - tested with ladder and MDF panel.
Idea - suspending blinds across the expanse of the room - audience can pull the material to alter the light.
Could I displace my walls across the room ?
Morning light my side - afternoon light opposite side.
The use of the ladder has intrigued - the shape representing the light vaults, and a perfect use of shelving and leaning.
In the MA area they have all the colours and texture - Birch Ply against the wood wool ceiling and cable tray.
The leaning walls reminded me of my pile of walls on the left.
STACKING
I enjoy the temporal element it gives by stacking boards/canvas's as it feel like it is something that will be changing.
This also seems to be a common theme in contemporary exhibitions.
I like how this artist displayed his work in what seemed like normal settings - chairs which the audience could sit on and the stacking of canvas's.
Breeze Block
Referencing the breeze block, I am cutting MDF and Plaster board into the size of the breeze blocks.
Switched my laser cut around to reference a brick and tested out my breeze blocks.
Using the breeze block as a background (template).
Playing with the pattern from my film. Altering positives and negatives. Layering on textures.
Altering the angle, creating more of a pattern.
Creating multiple patterns, seeing how different variations effects the pattern .
Using this to help me figure out the pattern on my scroll.
The WALLS
Sanded down the the wholes as didn't want the edges to be frayed.
The Shadows - when leaning against the wall multiple shadows- depending on how far away the more diffused layered effect.
Finding a similar pattern on the back of the tables in studio.
Gathering all my materials and studies to play around with layout and compositions.
The Scroll - responding to my smaller piece which is attached to the wall, I wanted to create this on a bigger scale. I made bigger silk screens of this pattern from the radiator and printed on a scroll. I then tested out the scroll in the space, using the ladder as a prop again.
When it was close to a white wall I noticed the colour bouncing off and it has got me thinking about painting the backs of my 'breeze block' size pieces or even the walls- painting the backs so it reflects back onto the wall.
Screen printing - I didn't go into the print room with pre conceived shapes or layouts I just let the shapes take care of them selves and responded to the composition slowly being create.
After printing on the scroll, I took it home to wax up the scroll completely.
In th first image can see where the wax hasn't soaked in, the paper looks like a bluish colour.
Using my smaller version as a reference on where to fold my lager scroll into place.
After reading a book on Mary Corse 'A Survey in Light', I came across this artist Robert Murray, whose sculpture reminds me of my paper sculpture.
Manouvering walls into other spaces, see a different perspective. Was feeling the space was a bit flat with everything stuck to a wall.
Leaving existing surfaces, when painting the floor, i tapped over an old tape line and the boarder of where the old wall used to sit. I have chosen to leave this marks, leaving an echo of the past space. The tape line running through the centre also helps off balance the space with it being offset to the right.
Breeze Blocks
Testing out configurations on the wall.
Thinking about the colour reflection from the scroll, I tested out painting the backs of some MDF breeze blocks to see how reflective the colours are. I tested out the colour I've been exploring from the space.
Thinking of physical objects, having a few concrete blocks in the space. Found Thermalite blocks - the colour was similar to the plaster board and I enjoyed the texture.
